Smooth and Continuous Stair Handrail
We were recently contacted by Peter from Principal Construction who was looking to install a wall mounted stair handrail in a creche in Dublin. The handrail needed to be smooth along its entire surface, meaning that our Kee Access handrail system would work perfectly.
Stairwell Handrail Considerations
- Continuous handrail at both sides of stairs
- Continuous at intermediate landings
- Extend 300mm beyong top and bottom step

Suitable Handrail Fittings For Stairs
The image above shows how the Kee Access Fittings are used to connect the handrail, manouevering it up the stairs and around the landing. The handrail then progresses up another flight, while all the time being continuous with no breaks or terminations. This is important because it maintains continuity, which is vital in a stair handrail as your hand can travel the whole way to the top without leaving the rail once.
How To Terminate A Stair Rail
The Wall Mounted End Return is used as the start and end point on a wall mounted handrail. It ensures that the rail is terminated safely and returned into the wall, hence the name. This way, when you are not looking at the rail as you travel (as we typically don’t), your hand will be alerted that you have hit the end of the handrail.
Used with: The 565 is used with a 514-7 Coupling. The coupling is an internal joiner which many of the fittings require to join with 42.4mm o/d tube.
Smooth Joints For Continuous Handrail
As mentioned above, this is the key joiner which is used to connect many of the fittings to the tube itself, while keeping the handrail smooth and continuous. The 514-7 has a 25mm shoulder which runs in line with the outer edge of the tube. This is what makes a Kee Access handrail different to the Kee Klamp system, where the handrail runs through the fitting, leaving a slight ridge which a hand will feel.
Slope To Level Handrail Joint
This handrail fitting is used where the slope of a ramp or steps meets the landing. As its name suggests, the Variable Angle can swivel to meet the required pitch, making it flexible and extremely useful.
Used with: The 554 works with 2x 514-7 Couplings, with one coupling joining the tube on each side of the Variable Angle.
Wall Mounted Handrail Bracket
The Wall Mounted Handrail Bracket is used as an intermediate support along the handrail. It is fixed to the wall using 3x countersunk screws, while the handrail itself is held to the saddle using self-tapping screws or multi-grip pop rivets.
90 Degree Handrail Fitting
The Solid Elbow fitting is used to turn the handrail around a 90° bend, such as a corner on a landing or a corner point on a wheelchair ramp. It can also be used where a handrail needs to turn a corner and immediately travel up a slope. Simply rotate and point the Elbow upwards to meet the required pitch.
Used with: The Solid Elbow requires 2x 514 Internal Couplings in order to work, with one inserted into each side of the fitting.
Painting The Handrail
Painting an access handrail is advised as it not only looks better, it also makes the handrail stand out from its surroundings. This can be especially useful to people with visual impairments. For this particular handrail, a bright yellow colour was applied which definitely ensures that the handrail stands out.
Quick-Connect Handrail Fittings
All Kee Access fittings are connected to the tube with the minimum of fuss. The fittings are tightened by locking up a grub screw using an allen key. No specialised labour is required, though it can help to have a colleague hold the tube in position as the fitting is being tightened. Once locked in place, the finished handrail is strong and durable.
