Safety Rails For Mezzanine Edges

Falls from height are still one of the main causes of injuries and fatalities within the workplace. Mezzanine railing is often overlooked within a factory or similar workplace, usually because access around the dangerous edge is not frequently required.
But as we all know, falling just once can be life changing and all it takes is one slip or drop in concentration for this to happen. Once a mezzanine is not often in use, it is often used as a storage space, where access is still required from time to time.

Installing Mezzanine Railing

Installing a mezzanine safety barrier as edge protection can be a very simple process when using Kee Klamp fittings. Each fitting quickly connects the tube in place using just an allen key, or a drill with a hexagonal drill bit.

Fixing The Mezzanine

The 62 Railing Base Flange can be bolted down to the floor to hold the uprights in position, while a 69 Railing Flange With Toeboard Adapter can be used where a toeboard is required. A toeboard is generally used where there is the possibility of there being loose materials near the mezzanine edge. These materials can be kicked off by accident, causing harm to anyone who may be underneath.

Workplace Safety Guidelines

It doesn’t take a whole lot for a company to ensure that they are following the correct safety guidelines and ultimately providing a safe workplace. Safety rails along an exposed edge can be fitted in no time at all and provide a cost-effective solution. Not that price should come into the equation when it comes to keeping workers safe. Safety barriers should also be put in place to protect workers from (moving) machinery and hazardous materials.

Access Points And Loading Bays

Safety Gates For Access

Even with a competent safety barrier in place, mezzanine edges can be dangerous at any point where there is a break in the system, such as an access point or loading bay. Accidents can still occur in these areas if the right precautions aren’t taken. An access point can be guarded by using a self-closing safety gate which automatically closes behind the user.

Mezzanine Pallet Gates

Revolving pallet gates are a great way of loading materials to a raised platform, while keeping workers safely away from the edge. It rotates on a pivot point and is easily altered without putting someone in danger. This ensures that the void is filled at all times and eliminates the chances of human error.

Mezzanine Railing Pallet Gates

Loading bays on a mezzanine level can be protected with a simple pallet gate, which can be transitioned between an open and closed position to ensure that a pallet or similar can be received without the system being compromised.

Ensuring The Correct Safety Measures

Every workplace should be individually assessed to identify possible risks as no 2 facilities are exactly the same. When the risks are identified, the correct safety measures should be put in place along with a safe system of work. The two combined, along with the necessary training of staff, should help to ensure an accident free workplace in 2019 and beyond.
