Simple handrail for ramps - Double rail
This simple project is a great example of how easy it is to create a protective handrail barrier on a slight slope.
The handrail is built with a top and middle rail, with the middle rail discouraging kids from climbing through the section. A middle rail on a slope such as this can also stop a wheelchair wheel from going off the edge of the ramp, and so can be crucial.
Simple handrail fittings
Because the gradient is so slight, the same fittings can be used which would normally be used for level ground. If the ramp featured a greater slope, 0-11 degree fittings could be used to ensure that the uprights which carry the handrail are kept plumb.
10-7 Single Socket Tee is used to attach the middle rail to the end post, and can also be used to carry the top rail on each intermediate post, where the handrail does not need to be joined.
15-7 Elbow is used to attach the top rail to an end post, thus creating a 90 degree turn.
25-7 Three Socket Tee is used to carry the top rail on each intermediate post. The rail can also be attached within this fitting if necessary, eliminating the need for joiners.
26-7 Two Socket Cross is used to carry the middle rail on each intermediate post. Unlike the top handrail, the tube must be cut here between each post.
67-7 Angled Railing Flange is used to attach posts to a slope which is between 0-11 degrees. A standard railing flange is used on flat ground, while there are other flanges available for slopes up to 60 degrees.
Tube size for handrail
We would recommend using size 7 (42.4mm) or size 8 (48.4mm) tubing for all handrail and safety barrier installations. Both provide a solid and comfortable handhold, while also providing the necessary strength to cope with the possible loading.
Upright spacings
Generally posts/uprights can be spaced between 1m and 1.5m apart, however this can be determined by the size of the tube being used, along with the possible loading being applied to each handrail section. We generally estimate the possible force against the handrail, by breaking its use down into 3 sections: Industrial use, Commercial use and handrail for retail/public access.
